Glossary for site:

The definitions for the following terms are taken from the IEEE Standard Dictionary of Electrical and Electronic Terms, published by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Asynchronous (data transmission) – Transmission of data requires a start bit, and stop bit in message.

Bell 202/202T - 600/1200-baud modem standardized for use in the general switch telephone network (U.S. Standard)

CMOS - Complimentary metal oxide semiconductor

Decibel (dB) – A unit of measurement used to express the ratio of two values, usually the power of electrical or electromagnetic signals; equal to 10 times the logarithm derived from a ratio of the two power levels, which are expressed in watts; the relative gain or loss of a signal when the measured signal value is compared in a ratio to another, usually its input, value. dBm = decibels relative to one milliwatt (1/1000 of a watt). 0 dBm = 1 milliwatt at 600 ohms.

Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) – That form of frequency modulation in which the modulating signal shifts the output frequency between predetermined values, and the output wave has no phase discontinuity

Isolated – Power input return is not at same voltage potential as modem supply return.

Leased Line – A series of points interconnected by telegraph or telephone channels, and reserved for the exclusive use of one customer

Loopback – Diagnostic procedure used for transmission devices; a test message is sent to a device being tested, which is then sent back to the originator and compared with the original transmission.

Millisecond (mS) – One thousandth of a second

Soft start – At turn-on, a gradual increase in output at a predetermined rate from zero to a set minimum to a desired maximum

Synchronous (data transmission) – A device whose speed of operation is related to the rest of the system to which the device is connected.

V.23 – 600/1200-baud modem standardized for use in the general switch telephone network (ITU European Standard). ITU stands for the International Telecommunications Union – formerly CCITT.

Voice-Grade Circuit – A telecommunications circuit used primarily for speech transmission, but suitable for computer transmissions.
